Copper sculpture is a very old art form and in the Americas
it can be traced back to Purepecha Indians of Central Mexico. The first shaping
of copper was done to create farming and domestic implements and weapons by
hammering copper ingots into shape.

Modern copper sculptures are created using techniques and
technology far advanced from the beginnings of the art form. While many
technologies may be used, the most common and popular is to creates a sculpture
by shaping separate pieces of copper sheeting then weld them together. This
allows the sculptor to produce as large a piece as he desires.

The blacksmith is one of the oldest professions known to
man. When ancient man discovered how the shape and use metals, the nature of
civilization was changed forever. And the person at the center of this change
was the blacksmith. In America, the blacksmith is an integral part of our
history. From the beginnings of the exploration

The basic technique of copper sculpting has not changed for
hundreds of year. The shaping of the metal is done by hammering it into the
desired shape. But copper is a brittle metal and if subjected to hammer force
when cold, may easily crack or split. To prevent this from happening the copper
is heated in a forge until it becomes malleable. Once it is soft, it can be
shaped with no danger of cracking.
